Geiger was shot and injured on May 17, 1981, while she was in her kitchen at home. Through a triple-glazed glass window, a bullet fired from a powerful weapon wounded her in the shoulder. Geiger spent almost three weeks in the hospital as a result of the incident. No one was ever held accountable for the shooting in 1981.
Colin Thatcher’s Murder of Ex-Wife
Geiger was discovered dead in her Regina garage on January 21, 1983, four days after Thatcher announced her retirement as minister of energy in Premier Grant Devine’s administration. On May 7, 1984, Thatcher was finally accused following a protracted police inquiry.
In the late summer and early fall of 1984, Thatcher faced a murder trial in Saskatoon. He persisted in appearing so that he could attempt to explain the taped discussion between Gary Anderson and him, in addition to the evidence offered. Serge Kujawa led the prosecution, and after a jury found him guilty, he was handed a life sentence with a 25-year parole ban.
Two weeks before his appeal, in late April 1985, a package with the Winnipeg postmark arrived at the Regina Leader-Post. A homemade hatchet that the letter claimed to be the murder weapon, an anonymous confession to Geiger’s murder, and two pictures of a naked woman that the letter claimed to be Geiger were all included in the package. The publication gave the Regina Police the package. The crown finally acknowledged to Thatcher’s attorney that the images and hatchet had been lost after many requests for their disclosure.
Thatcher’s full parole was given on November 30, 2006.

The 440-page book Final Appeal: Anatomy of a Frame, published by Thatcher, is about his legal situation. On September 1st, 2009, ECW Press published it. Thatcher consented to forfeit all proceeds from the sale of his book, including his $5,000 advance from his publisher, on April 21, 2010.
