Rookie Career

Ohtani made his first appearance at the age of 18 in the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters’ season-opening game. The match was held on March 29, 2013. He was playing as a right fielder. Later, he was chosen for a Pacific League roster spot for the 2013 All-Star Game. As a pitcher, he ended the season with a 3–0 record in 11 starts.

Professional Career

He played his first game with the Angels against the Detroit Tigers. Ohtani came to be known as the first Japanese-born player to hit for the cycle in MLB history. On September 12, Ohtani’s 2019 season was cut short because it was informed that he needed surgery to restore a bipartite patella. He ended the season batting .286/.343/.505 with 18 home runs, 62 RBIs, and 12 stolen bases in 106 games.

Later on, he made history by becoming the first player to be chosen as an All-Star as both a position player and a pitcher. Ohtani hit his 32nd home run of the year on July 7. It was a solo shot off of Boston Red Sox starter Eduardo Rodríguez. The shot passed Hideki Matsui’s mark in 2004, for the maximum number of home runs hit during a season by a Japanese-born player in MLB

International Career

Ohtani was chosen to be a player in Japan’s Under-18 National Team that finally finished in sixth place at the 18U Baseball World Championship in Seoul, Korea. Ohtani was on the 28-man roster for the Japan National Baseball Team of the 2017 World Baseball Classic but was compelled to depart due to an ankle injury.
