James Wiseman’s Career, NBA

James Wiseman, a freshman at The Ensworth School in Nashville, Tennessee, was 200 pounds and 6 feet 9 inches tall (91 kg). Jordan Bone, a future NBA player, was his teammate. Wiseman was one of ESPN’s top 25 recruits for the class of 2019 by June 2016. He participated in 2016 as a member of the St. Louis Eagles Amateur Athletic Union squad. He led Ensworth to the Division II-AA semifinals of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) in 2016–17 as a sophomore. He received honorable mention for the MaxPreps Sophomore All-American team with a scoring average of roughly 20 points and six rebounds per game. A Memphis judge upheld the TSSAA’s initial determination of Wiseman’s ineligibility for the 2017–18 season in October 2019, after he had transferred to the University of Memphis. The judge reasoned that the TSSAA coaching link rule was not overly ambiguous and did not infringe on Wiseman’s property rights as an athlete. Wiseman was rated as the #1 recruit in the 2019 class by 247Sports and ESPN and was a unanimous five-star recruit out of high school.

The odds-on favorite to be selected first overall in the 2020 NBA draught was Wiseman. A slight shoulder injury prevented Wiseman from traveling to Nassau, Bahamas, in August 2019 to play with Memphis for a series of preseason exhibition games. Because of an ankle injury, he was unable to play in either of his team’s two preseason games in October. On November 5, Wiseman made his regular-season debut for the Tigers against South Carolina State, helping them to a 97-64 victory with 28 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks in 22 minutes. Wiseman stated on December 19, 2019, that he would leave Memphis, work with an agent, and get ready for the 2020 NBA draught, thereby ending his collegiate career. He had missed seven games due to his suspension. He was regarded by draught analysts as one of the top prospects in his class. Wiseman was viewed as a possible first-round selection.
