He got an Anglican grant which empowered him to enroll for a secondary school in Modeerport. The racial discrimination imposed by politically-sanctioned racial discrimination which forced black people and his encounters with discrimination served as a political awakening for Modise. Soon after finishing his matric, between 1950 and 1955 Modise worked at a wholesale store and later for a medical specialist named Dr van Aswegen to raise money to empower him to facilitate his examinations at college. In January 1955 he enrolled at the University of Fort Hare to study medicine. It was while he was en route to Fort Hare that he set out to join the African National Congress (ANC).
