After some time, he was promoted to the tank regiment’s chief of staff. From 1993-95, he served as the commander of a northwest group of forces and also of the 144th Guards Motor Rifle Division.
In 1997, when he graduated from the Military Academy of General Staff of Russia, he was appointed as the Moscow Military District’s 1st Deputy Army Commander. During 2001 and 2003, he was the commander of the North Caucasus Military District of the 58th Army and it happened during the 2nd Chechen War. He participated in the arrest of Yuri Budanov and acquired great praise.
In 2006, he was appointed as the Leningrad Military District and in 2012, acquired the position of Central Military District Commander. This was his journey to become the Chief of General Staff and after this on December 2010, Valery was appointed as the deputy chief of general staff.Â
