Kerr attended the University of Arizona from 1983 to 1988 after being lightly recruited out of high school. He was named to the United States national team for the FIBA World Championship in Spain in the summer of 1986. It was the last time an American senior men’s team comprised entirely of amateur players won a gold medal. In the tournament, he blew out his knee, causing him to miss the entire 1986–87 season with the Wildcats. Kerr and colleague All-American teammate Sean Elliott helped the Wildcats reach the NCAA Tournament Final Four in 1988. Kerr was a two-time first-team All-Pac-10 selection and in 1987–88, he set an NCAA single-season record for 3-point percentage (57.3 percent, 114–199).
