She is an American attorney and politician who has worked as the U.S. Representative for Wyoming’s at-large congressional division since 2017. In 1996, she graduated from the University of Chicago Law School with a Juris Doctorate. Liz Cheney also attended the Oriental Institute, where she studied Middle Eastern history. Her mother’s alma institution, Colorado College, awarded her a Bachelor of Arts degree, and she penned her final thesis, “The Evolution of Presidential War Powers.” Her parents were both students at the University of Wisconsin–Madison at the time of her birth. She joined Armitage Associates LLP, a consulting firm created by Richard Armitage, a former Defense Department official and Iran-Contra operative who eventually served as Deputy Secretary of State, after 1993. From 2019 to 2021, Liz Cheney was the chair of the House Republican Conference, the third-highest post in the House Republican leadership, after serving as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs in the George W. Bush administration. While co-chairing the Iran Syria Policy and Operations Group with Elliott Abrams, she advocated for regime change in Iran. During the George W. Bush administration, she held many positions in the US State Department, including Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs and Coordinator for Broader Middle East and North Africa Initiatives.
