Gregory Porter was born in Sacramento, California and was raised in Bakersfield, California. He was raised by his mother named Ruth who was a minister there. Porter was one of the eight children of his parents. Porter had a large influence on his mother on his life. She encouraged Porter to sing in church at an early age. According to Gregory, his father Rufus was largely absent from his life. His father was present in the house but he didn’t have any emotional support from him.
Porter’s mother died of cancer when he was 21 years old and her last words for him were “sing, baby, sing”.

It reached the top 10 on the UK album chart which is very rare for the jazz genre. 100,000 units were sold of it the United Kingdom only.
