Baier began his tv career with a local station in Rockford, Illinois, before moving on to WRAL-TV, Raleigh’s CBS affiliate. In 1998, he sent Fox News an audition tape and was employed as the network’s Atlanta bureau chief. He did drive from Georgia to Arlington, Virginia, to cover the Pentagon attack on September 11, 2001. He never returned to the Atlanta bureau and instead became the network’s Pentagon correspondent, a position he held for five years and during which he made 11 trips to Afghanistan and 13 trips to Iraq. In 2007, he was named Fox News’ White House correspondent, covering George W. Bush’s administration. In the fall of 2007, he began filling in on Fridays for Brit Hume, then the announcer of Special Report. Brit Hume anchored his final performance on December 23, 2008, and announced that Baier would take over as Special Report anchor. On January 5, 2009, he offered to host his first show as a permanent anchor. Open records request filed to start investigating anti-Fox News bias in the Obama administration turned up an internal email written by Deputy White House Communications Director Jen Psaki on October 23, 2009, in which she referred to Baier as a “lunatic” and threatened to put “some dead fish in the fox cubby.” On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in October 2021, Baier encouraged his new novel To Rescue the Republic: Ulysses S.
