Lahiri was born in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, to a Hindu Brahmin family. Aparesh Lahiri and Bansuri Lahiri, both from Jalpaiguri, were well-known Bengali classical and Shyama Sangeet singers and musicians. [requires citation] He is the only child in the family. His maternal uncle, singer Kishore Kumar, is one of his relatives. At the age of three, Lahiri began playing the tabla. He was initially taught by his parents.
