He was born on 3 April 1914 in Amritsar and died on 27 June 2008 in Wellington.
Sam Manekshaw Life and Education
Sam was born on 3 February 1914 in Amritsar. He did his schooling at Sheward Collegeย Nanital. Furthermore, he did his graduation from Hindu Sabha College, Amritsar. After that, he attended the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. He gave the exam of Indian Military(IMA). He got selected and he was sixth on the merit list. In 1932 he joined the first batch of the Indian Military.

Sam, was born in Amritsar. His father name was Horsmuji Manekshaw was an army doctor by profession. His mother was a homemaker by profession and her name was Hilla. He had five siblings, two brothers and two sisters. The name of them is not known. Sam got married on 22 April 1939 with his wife who’s name was Siloo Bode. He had two daughters whose names are sherry and Maja.
Sam Manekshaw Military Career
Sam was an Indian Military officer. He was selected for the first batch of the Indian Military. There were all forty students in his batch. He began his training on 1 October 1932. He was commissioned in the second battle of royal scots in Lahore on 1 February 1935. He was appointed as the quartermaster of his battalion in October 1938. During world war 2 he was appointed as the acting caption and major. He was fighting in Burma in 1942. During his capture on the hill half of his battalion was killed but still, they managed to accomplish this mission. They move further but Sam was shot by a light machine gun. He got seven bullets in his stomach. After that Major General David Cowan pinned his own Military Cross into Sam’s chest. When he was taken to the surgeon, the surgeon refused to treat him and he said his condition is very bad and he will not survive but he managed to survive. His half of the liver was blown off and some part of his intestine has to be removed. He recovered in 1943. After the Partition of India in 1947, Sam was assigned to the 8th Gorkha Regiment. He was the General staff officer there and he displayed his administrative skills. At the end of 1947, he was appointed to the 5th Gorkha Regiment. During these years he handled many disputes. In February 1952 he was appointed as a Colonel, April. He was appointed as a commander of the 167th infantry Brigade. In 1961 there were some court inquiries against Sam. Later Nehru apologised to him for the inquiries and appointed him as the acting Lieutenant General. After that, he was appointed as the army commander and travelled throughout India. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1968 for preventing the insurgency of Nagaland.ย On 8th June 1969, he was appointed as the 8th chief of army staff. He effectively turned the Indian Army into the instrument of War.
Sam Manekshaw Death
After retirement, Sam along with his wife got settled in Coonoor, a small town in Tamil Nadu. In June 2008 Sam was admitted to the hospital he was suffering from Pneumonia, his condition was getting worse with many complications. On 27 June 2008, Sam passed away.
