His father, Joseph Buttigieg, was an immigrant from Malta and was a professor of literature at The University of Notre Dame at South Bend. Pete’s mother, Jennifer Anne, was also a professor. She taught at Notre Dame for 29 years.
In June 2015, Mr. Buttigieg wrote an essay in the South Bend Tribune, in which he disclosed his sexual identity as gay. A few months later, in August he met his future partner/husband, Chasten Glezman, on the dating app Hinge. He is a Junior High School Teacher.
After dating for two years, they got engaged in December 2017. On June 16, 2018, the couple exchanged wedding vows. Now they live in the neighborhood of South Bend with their two rescue dogs, Truman and Buddy.

He studied at Stanley Clark School in South Bend till 8th standard. In 2000, while studying at St. Joseph High School, Buttigieg became the recipient of a first prize for the JFK Profiles in Courage Essay Contest awarded by the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston. To receive the prize, he traveled to Boston where he met Caroline Kennedy and other members of President Kennedy’s family.
After his schooling, Pete went to Harvard where he majored in History and Literature in 2005. He was also the president of the Harvard Institute of Politics Student Advisory Committee. While studying at Harvard, Mr. Buttigieg wrote his undergraduate thesis on “the influence of Puritanism on U.S. foreign policy as reflected in Graham Greene’s novel The Quiet American”. After graduating from Harvard, he was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship.

Before graduating from Pembroke College, Oxford, Mr. Buttigieg worked as an investigative intern at WMAQ-TV, Chicago’s NBC news affiliate. He was also an intern for Jill Long Thompson’s unsuccessful congressional campaign in 2002. Later, Pete served as an adviser to Jill Long Thompson’s unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign in 2008.
From 2004 to 2005, he worked in Washington, D.C., as a conference director for The Cohen Group, an international strategic consulting firm of former U.S. Secretary of Defense William Cohen. Mr. Pete spent several months as a policy and research specialist for Senator John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign.
After graduating from Oxford, Mr. Buttigieg started working as a consultant at McKinsey & Company, where he worked from 2007 to 2010. In 2009, Mr. Pete has also served in the United States Navy Reserve unit of the US Navy as a Lieutenant. He served till 2017.
