Her parents got a divorce in 1986, after which Norah lived with her mother in Grapevine, Texas. Initially, she was singing in the church and later took lessons in piano and voice. She had attended Colleyville Middle School and Grapevine High School and later transferred to Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts situated in Dallas. Early on, Norah Jones used to sing regular solos at the local Methodist Church. During her time in high school, she used to sing in the school choir, participated in band and also played the alto saxophone.
