Muriel Bowser Political Career
Muriel Bowser had announced in March 2013 that she is going to run for Mayor of the District of Columbia in the 2014 election.
Muriel Bowser rode the wave of familiarity with the area and empathizing with the change. She scorned corruption in the District’s government and favoured free Metro fares for students. Though, Bowser was being constantly criticized for being too inexperienced for the position. She had fewer legislative accomplishments than others. She usually limited the number of her debates by only agreeing to participate after the field of candidates had been set. Bowser was endorsed by EMILY’s List and the editorial board of The Washington Post. She saw victory in the primary election with 43 per cent of the vote.
In the general election, Bowser was a candidate against the likes of Libertarian Bruce Majors and Independents David Catania, Nestor Djonkam and Carol Schwartz, D.C. Statehood Green Faith Dane. No Republican filed. Bowser won the election with 80,824 votes (54.53%), and took office on January 2, 2015.
Muriel Bowser as Mayor
Muriel Bowser helped in developing the District of Columbia in many different phases and areas. Though she passed laws with good intentions, they were too strict and were received poorly by the people. Though one could argue that the law themselves were greatly at fault.
The black residents in D.C. were killed by COVID-19 at 5.9 times the rate of white people. This caused a huge disparity. An investigation was conducted which concluded that the unequal toll was due to multiple strategic missteps by Bowser’s administration. She had many shortcomings with the testing site and the health team. Later on, in a hurry to reopen everything in June 2020 the government disregarded everything. Her administration has removed data from the system to hide the real numbers and to show how it failed to meet a key metric.
Muriel Bowser was seen not following her own protocols to celebrate Joe Biden’s victory. She deemed it to be ‘essential’.
