From 1969 to 1972, Corso was the head football coach at the University of Louisville, Indiana University Bloomington from 1973 through 1982, and Northern Illinois University in 1984, amassing a 73โ85โ6 career college football coaching record. In 1985, he was the head coach of the Orlando Renegades of the United States Football League, with a 5โ13 record.
Early Life And Playing Career
Alessandro and Irma, Corso’s parents, were Italian immigrants. At the age of 15, his father escaped Italy during World War I. ย Irma, who had a fifth-grade education, worked in school cafeterias and boarding schools, while Alessandro, who had a second-grade education, was a lifetime laborer who installed terrazzo flooring.ย Corso was born on August 7, 1935, in Cicero, Illinois. He relocated to Miami with his family when he was eleven years old and went on to play quarterback at Miami Jackson Senior High School. He was a baseball prospect who was given a $5,000 incentive to sign as a shortstop with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He selected college instead, playing football and baseball at Florida State University (FSU), where he shared a dorm with future University of Miami baseball coach Ron Fraser and football player and actor Burt Reynolds. For his quickness on the football field, Corso acquired the moniker “Sunshine Scooter” while at FSU. He established the school record for most career interceptions as a defensive player, which he held for more than two decades until Monk Bonasorte broke it. Corso was also a member of the fraternity Alpha Tau Omega. In the 1956 Blue-Gray Game, he was the starting quarterback for the South, but his team fell 14โ0 to the Len Dawson-led North.
Lee Corso Personal Life
Corso suffered a stroke on May 16, 2009, at his Florida home, leaving him partially paralyzed. He spent three days in critical care and a week in the hospital after which he underwent extensive rehabilitation. For the 2009 season, he was allowed to resume his ESPN College GameDay duties. Corso’s cognitive function was severely slowed by the stroke, which rendered him unable to speak for a month (his speech eventually recovered with few noticeable side effects). Since the stroke, Corso has had to script and rehearse his appearances on College GameDay and is no longer able to effectively improvise. Corso and his wife, Betsy, have been married since 1957. They are the proud parents of four children and 10 grandkids.
