About John McAfee
He was born in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom, on 18 September 1945. His birth had happened on a U.S. Army base (of the 596th Ordnance Ammunition Company). His father was an American, and his mother was a British. He was raised in Salem, Virginia, United States. He has specified in his interviews before that he feels as much British as American. When he was 15, his father, whom a BBC columnist described as “an abusive alcoholic”, killed himself with a gun. He has received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Roanoke College in Virginia, and subsequently went on to get an honorary Sc.D. degree in 2008. He has been married twice. The name of his first wife was Judy McAfee and second one was Janice Dyson.

He was employed as a programmer by NASA’s Institute for Space Studies in New York City in 1968 for working on the Apollo program. Later on, he went to Univac and Xerox while working at different positions. In 1978, he joined Computer Sciences Corporation as a software consultant. He was employed by Lockheed and while working for them, he received a copy of Brain, the first computer virus for the PC. That is when he began developing software to combat viruses.
In 1987, McAfee founded McAfee Associates Inc., to sell his program, the first anti-virus software to market. The company was incorporated in Delaware in 1992. In August 1993, John McAfee stepped down as chief executive, but remained with the company as the chief technical officer. In 1994, he sold his remaining stake in the company. He had no further involvement in its operations. Intel acquired McAfee in August 2010. In January 2014, Intel announced it will sell McAfee-related products as Intel Security. McAfee expressed his pleasure at the name change, saying, “I am now everlastingly grateful to Intel for freeing me from this terrible association with the worst software on the planet.” The business was soon demerged, once more under the McAfee name.
Later on he tried his hand at politics and different companies. In the mid 90s, he founded a company behind PowWow, one of the first instant messaging and chat programs for Windows operating systems. Later, he invested in firewall maker ZoneAlarm, and joined the company’s board of directors. But his greatest achievement still remained McAfee software which he hated and did not want to be a part of anymore.

Not soon after he found his finances depleting fast and by 2009 he was left with just $4 million (down from $100 million). Recession had hit him hard, and he had to sell off his properties. He then started the company called QuorumEx, based in Belize. It was to make herbal-based antibiotics. But his research facility was raided in 2012 by the police department’s Gang Suppression Unit on suspicion that he was manufacturing methamphetamine, a highly addictive and illegal drug that can produce euphoria and stimulant effects.
Although he was never charged, the research facility was shut down. It has been reported that when police raided his compound, officers found McAfee in bed with a 17-year-old girl. Also in 2012, he had a case built against him of killing of his neighbour Gregory Faull. Faull apparently had issues with McAfee’s lifestyle. McAfee denied that he was connected to the killing, and went into hiding from the local authorities.

In July 2019, McAfee was arrested in the Dominican Republic after he and five others were suspected of travelling on a yacht carrying high-calibre weapons, ammunition, and military-style gear. Later in October 2020, he was arrested at Barcelona’s international airport by the Spanish authorities on the order of the US government. He was trialed and charged in the US state of Tennessee with avoiding taxes for four years, and failing to report his income made through crypto currencies, consulting work, and selling his life rights in the form of a documentary. McAfee argued that an attempt to extradite him to the US was politically motivated. After Spain’s highest court approved his extradition to the US, McAfee was found dead at the in the jail he was held in, on 23 June 2021.
