Joel Kim Booster Early Life
Booster was born in South Korea, was adopted by an American couple, and was taken into a conservative, white, evangelical Christian family when he was just an infant. He was homeschooled by his family and was raised on the grounds of Plainfield, Illinois.
At the age of 16, he went to public school for the first, marking his experience into the words “the first time being around non-religious people.”
He was already aware of the fact that he was gay since his childhood but decided to keep it a secret fearing the consequences he would face for he belonged to a conservative society. His fears soon turned out to be true. When booster made it to his senior high school, his parents found out about him being gay by reading his sexual encounters with other guys noted in his diary. Thereafter, he moved out and started to couchsurf, until one of his close friends offered him to stay with him.
For his bachelor’s degree, he went to Millikin University to study theatre.
Joel Kim Booster Career
Booster started his career as a copywriter, performing in theatre and later writing jokes after his working hours. Around that time he was living in Chicago. As for his Stand-up career, he started by opening plays in Chicago’s theatre scene. Later he moved to New York in 2014 to pursue his career in comedy. In 2016, he performed a set on Conan. Then in 2017, he started his own Comedy Central Stand-up Presents special. Booster has also shown interest in writing and has written for many shows. Some of them are Billy on the Street, Big Mouth, and The other two.
His debut Stand-up album was released on 3rd November 2018, entitled Model Minority. Kim has acted in Susan Sarandon in Viper club, a YouTube original film, Netflix’s The week of, on Hulu’s Shrill. In 2019, he was seen as a co-host in a digital series called Unsend, alongside Patti Harrison on Comedy Central. His popular movies include Fire, The Other Two, Island, and Trip.
He is also a regular panelist on the NPR show named ‘Wait, wait… Don’t Tell Me!’. He has appeared on one of the episodes of The George Lucas Talk Show which was aired on 8 December 2020. Kim also co-hosts the podcast Urgent Care.
Kim was called a Comic to Watch by Variety and was named a Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in Hollywood and Entertainment. He was also included in the list of 20 Comedians You Should Know and Will Know by Vulture.
