Haven Shepherd’s real name is ‘Do Thi Thuy Phuong‘. She was born on 10 March 2003 in Vietnam. When Haven was 16 months old, her father attempted suicide. His Father exploded a bomb that was meant to kill his daughter, and both her parents. She outlived the blast but suffered extended burns. The blast took off both her lower legs, amputated below the knee. On November 19, 2004, Shepherd was adopted by Shelly and Rob Shepherd who belonged to Carthage, Missouri. The couple raised her with love and compassion. She attended a local high school and surprisingly she competes both in disabled and regularly abled competitions.
The career of Haven Shepherd
Haven Shepherd is an alumnus of the NubAbility Foundation’s All-Sport Summer Camp program. In the year 2014, Shepherd entered her first track as well as field race. She earned a pair of Ossur running feet that helped in improving her running capabilities. In 2016, Shepherd opened up her arena for swimming. Consecutively in the 2017 Can-Am Open, Haven Shepherd placed first in the 100 butterflies, 50 freestyle, 100 breaststrokes, 200 IM, 100 freestyle. In the 2018 World Para Swimming World Series, she secured 1st, 50m and 100m freestyle. In the following year, she won two silver and one bronze medal in Lima, Peru in August 2019 as part of the Team USA Parapan American Games. Haven qualified for the Paralympics Emerging Swim Team and is currently competing in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. She is definitely going to play in the 2024 games.
Besides Haven Shepherd also works as a model for Models of Diversity and also serves as a spokeswoman for the Challenged Athletes Foundation.
