Early Life of Elaine Paige

Elaine Paige was born on 5 March 1948. She was originally named, Elaine Jill Bickerstaff and raised in Barnet,  Hertfordshire. Her father operated as an estate agent and her mother was a milline. Interestingly her mother was a singer at a young age, and her father was an amateur drummer.

At the age of 14. Paige evoked the desire for a career in musical theatre. Paige’s musical ability was encouraged by her school music teacher, Ann Hill, who was also the head of the music department. Elaine Paige was a member of Hill’s choir, and her first role on stage was playing Susanna in a school composition of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. The production was followed by a few appearances in The Boy Mozart and solos in Handel’s Messiah – “a difficult work for little children”. After seeing her great performance in school, her father suggested that she should go to drama school. Therfore she joined the Aida Foster Theatre School. She initially disliked stage school as she lacked confidence. But her father always supported her to continue and she grew to enjoy her time there.

Soon after graduating, her first project was modelling children’s clothing at the Ideal Home Exhibition. Previous to the stage school she attended Southaw Girls’ School where she received two CSE qualifications.

Elaine’s Career

She made her first professional debut on stage in 1964, at the age of 16. Her appearance in the 1968 production of Hair marked her West End appearance. Paige was chosen to play Eva Perón in the first production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita in 1978, which ultimately brought her to the attention of the broader audience. As a result of her performance, she won the Laurence Olivier Award of the Year in a musical. Paige has released several compositions of hers. In 2014, Paige marked her 50 years in the show and entertainment business. She announced on her official website a “Farewell” concert tour and a new career-spanning album. It is an Ultimate Collection to mark milestones in her successful career.
