Dawson started playing hockey at a young age. Born and brought up in Newfoundland, he played in the Newfoundland Bantam AAA league as a “Tri Pen Ice Under 15 AAA” player. His record for the same is 68 points in 24 games. After this, started playing prep hockey at his school, Bishop School College. At the age of 15, Mercer was playing with the varsity Under 18 Ice Hockey team. There he made a record of 18 goals and 30 assists in 51 games.
This made him rank higher in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) central scouting. He was drafted eighth overall by Drummondville Voltigeurs in QMJHL’s 2017 draft. In QMJHL, he also made a record of 16 points in 68 games as a rookie. Around this time, he was also to play the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge for Team Canada Black U-17.ย By the end of his 2019-20 season, he recorded 60 points in 42 games. For his performance, he was nominated for the Michael Bossy Trophy.
In December 2020, Mercer signed his three-year, entry-level contract with New Jersey Devils. With this marked his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) the following year and played his debut match against Chicago Blackhawks. In the same match, he also recorded his career’s first NHL assist with Andreas Johnsson. In another game after a few days, he recorded his first NHL goal against Seattle Kraken.
Internationally, Dawson participated in the World Junior Ice Hockey Championship in 2020 and 2021 and in the IIHF World Championship in 2022.
