Cox was born and raised in the village of Little Lever near Bolton, Great Manchester with the name of Sarah Joanne Cox but later was known as Sara Cox across the world. Cox was the youngest of the five children in the family. Her parents drifted apart when she was around six or seven years of age and she shifted to another house along with her mother and sister in the same village. She went to Smithills High School till the age of 16 and left Canon Slade School to further pursue her career in modelling.

Cox’s career began as she made her appearance in the music video for Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark‘s 1993 single “Everyday“. She hosted her first television show, showcased the “Girl Power” on “The Girlie Show” on channel 4. Further, she had a stretch on Channel 5 entertainment show “Exclusive” and Channel 4 music program “Born Sloppy”.ย In 1997, Cow showcased on the UK feed of MTV casting MTV Hot, a late-night music show, and played role in her first film “The Bitterest Pill”.ย In the year 1998 September, Cox became the host of “The Big Breakfast”, succeeding on the path of her close friend Zoe Ball. She got the opportunity to interview stars such as Robbie William, Stint, and Leonardo DiCaprio during her hosting of “The Big Breakfast”.
A transfer came to her in September 1999 when she started working with BBC Radio 1 and served as the co-host of a Saturday lunchtime show along with Emma B from 13:00 to 15:00. Cox had set up a famous show “The Surgery” along with Mark Hamilton where she acted as ‘nurse Coxy’.ย As her friend Zoe Ball left the organization, Cox came in place of her and started hosting Radio 1 Breakfast which resulted in amazing listening figures growing rapidly from 6.9 million to 7.8 million listeners in just fifteen months of her job. In 2003 BBC confirmed that Cox, whose listening figures have decreased to 6.6 million would be replaced by Chris Moyles in January 2004. After leaving BBC Cox hosted an afternoon ‘drivetime’ slot, which she swapped with Chris Moyles. After she returned to Radio 1 in the early years of 2005 Scott Mills, the host who took over her slot was provided with the drivetime slot permanently. From February 2005, Cox started hosting the afternoon show on Saturdays and Sundays. In June 2011, Cox started hosting the fourth series of the comedy program “Hot Gossip” on BBC Radio 2.
Regardless of hosting shows on radio, she also hosted several television shows such as “The Great Pottery Throw Down”, “The Album Chart Show” on Channel 4, and many more. She even wrote a book “Till the Cows Come Home: A Lancashire Childhood” in March 2019 which got published by Coronet Books.
