Oommen Chandy (October 31, 1943 – July 18, 2023) was an Indian politician and statesman who served as Kerala’s 10th Chief Minister from 2004 to 2006 and again from 2011 to 2016.

From 2006 to 2011, he was also the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. He served as MLA for Puthuppally in the State Assembly from 1970 until his death in 2023.

Moreover, he is the longest-serving MLA in Kerala’s Legislative Assembly and the only Indian Chief Minister to receive a United Nations award for public service.

He was a key figure in the Indian National Congress party. His death shocked the nation after serving as an MLA for a long time.

Reports have stated that he was undergoing cancer treatments since 2019. He was announced dead in a Bengaluru Hospital through his son’s Facebook post.

Oommen Chandy Early Life:

Oommen Chandy was born in Kumarakom, Kerala, India, on October 31, 1943. 

Not much information has been disclosed on the internet about his parents. Chandy was a Christian and belonged to an Orthodox community.

He attended St George’s High School in Puthuppally and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from CMS College in Kottayam.

He later obtained a bachelor’s degree in law (LL.B) from the Government Law College in Ernakulam.

Oommen Chandy Religion and Caste

Oommen was a Christian and claimed to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. He belonged to Orthodox Christian community.

His Political Career:

handy began his political career as the president of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) from 1967 to 1969. In 1970, he was elected president of the State Youth Congress.

Oommen Chandy was Kerela’s Chief Minister for seven years, serving two terms. Once from 2004 to 2006, and again from 2011 to 2016.

Apart from that, he served as a Minister in various governments led by A K Antony and K Karunakaran. He was, for example, Finance Minister from 2 July 1991 to 22 June 1994, Home Minister from 28 December 1981 to 17 March 1982, and Labour Minister from 27 April 1977 to 27 October 1978.

As the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, Chandy represented the Kottayam district’s Puthuppally constituency.

He was the MLA for more than 50 years, setting a record for the longest tenure.

Chandy became a minister in K Karunakaran’s cabinet for the first time in 1977. In 1970, he began his political career by representing Puthupally.

Furthermore, he even served as Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee from 1996 to 1998.

Oommen Chandy has been recognized as a remarkable leader. He implemented many schemes under his authority.

He has sanctioned many schemes including the unemployment allowance and took over welfare measures for the labourers.

He even implemented the Karunya benevolent scheme that allowed free treatments to patients suffering from Haemophilia, cancer, and heart diseases.

He has moreover helped in the development of major infrastructure projects including the Smart City Project and Thiruvananthapuram Light Metro Project.

Oommen Chandy Wife and Son:

Ommen Chandy was married to Mariamma Chandy. The couple shared a loving relationship.

Mariamma described her husband, affectionately referred to as Kunju, as likable and naive, traits he inherited from his mother. He lacked patience, humility, and the ability to say “no” to others.

Oommenn Chandy

The couple has three children, Achu, Maria, and Chandy Oommen. Achu Oommen, the eldest daughter, lives in Kochi’s coastal city of Ernakulam.

She continued her education in Zoology, where she stood out as one of the brightest students at St. Teresa’s College. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in biological sciences at the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology in New Delhi, preferring to stay academic rather than enter politics.

Maria Oommen, Chandy’s other daughter, is a doctor who has always been by her father’s side.

Chandy Oommen is the Chairman of the Indian Youth Congress’s National Outreach Cell and member of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

Oommen Chandy Death:

Oommen Chandy took his last breath on 18 July 2023. He was undergoing cancer treatment. He passed away at the age of 79. the news of his death was shared by his son on Facebook.

The state government has announced a shutdown of schools and colleges on account of the death of the state’s most respected leader who always chose to stand with the crowds.
