Lucie Blackman Went Missing & Murder
On 1 July 2000 Lucie went on a dohan with a customer who is Akira Takagi as he claimed himself the president of an import-export company and offered £500 to Lucie for the date.
As she agreed and told her friend Louise that she would meet her at the club later that night and she also called her boyfriend Scott and told him that she loved him.
After that night Lucie never showed up at the club or contacted anyone again.
On the next day, Louise received a phone call from Takagi he said that Lucie had joined a religious cult and would never see her again and he also said that he had given Lucie £10,000 as a farewell gift.
As Louise was alarmed by this strange call and contacted Lucie’s family in England and her family immediately flew to Tokyo to look for Lucie and reported her missing to the police. They also launched a media campaign to raise awareness of Lucie’s case and offered £10,000 rewards for any information related to Lucie.
In the first instance, Japanese police treated Lucie’s case missing as a runway or a possible suicide case.
They were least interested to investigate Takagi or search his properties without solid proof or a warrant as they also face language and cultural barriers in dealing with foreign media and the hostess industry.
Meanwhile, Lucie’s family hired a private investigator and lawyers to help them to find Lucie.
They also got support from the British government and celebrities like Richard Branson and Paul McCartney.
Lucie Blackman Was Found & Cause of Death
They got a breakthrough in February 2001 when police received an anonymous tip which led them to Takagi seaside apartment in Minura, Kanagawa Prefecture.
As they found several videotapes related to drugging, raping, and torturing various women in his apartment.
Lucie’s passport, credit card, driver’s license, clothing, jewelry, and hair extensions were discovered by the police.
As police searched in the nearby cave they found Lucie’s body buried in a concrete block her head was wrapped with two plastic bags over it.
Her death’s cause is not revealed due to an advanced state of decomposition of the body.
Lucie Blackman Case: Trial & Verdict
On 6 April 2001 Takagi got arrested on charges of abduction, rape, and murder and police also got out knew his real identity as Jojo Obara a 48-year-old Korean-Japanese businessman and property owner he also had a history of sexual violence and was accused of killing an Australian woman, Carita Ridgway in 1992 and raping eight other women between 1994-2000.
As trial begin on 4 July 2001 and the case lasted for 6 years it was the longest and most complex trial in Japanese history which involves 100 witnesses, 1,400 pieces of evidence, and 20,000 pages of court transcripts.
Obara also pleaded not guilty to all charges and maintained his silence he also fired several lawyers and filed many appeals and motions to delay proceedings.
On 24 April 2007, Tokyo District Court found Obara guilty of multiple rape charges and manslaughter for Ridway’s death but acquitted him of Lucie’s rape and murder of lack of direct evidence and he was sentenced to imprisonment.
As on 16 December 2008, The Tokyo High Court overturned the acquittal and convicted Obara of abducting Lucie and raping her while she was unconscious and dismembering and disposing of her body as Lucie’s Family and the prosecution appealed the verdict that there was enough circumstantial evidence to that Obara murdered Lucie so High court upheld the life sentence.
Later Obara appealed again in the Supreme Court of Tokyo but his appeal got rejected on 21 April 2011 and his conviction and sentence became final and he was transferred to maximum security prison in Saitama Prefecture.
