She established the Urban Network which was an alliance of African American professional organizations. It aims at providing scholarships for young people. She has also served as a public defender for the Legal Aid Society.

Formerly, she served in New York Governor Mario Cuomo’s Task Force. Its agenda was to have Diversity in the Judiciary. She served as counsel for Albert Vann, Chief of Staff. Back in 1999, she was appointed the first Assistant Attorney General. She was put in charge of the Brooklyn regional office. While working in that position, James worked in many positions but prominently focused on consumer complaints involving predatory lending and other illegal business methods.
