He still managed to earn decent marks despite his wrestling success. He joined the effort to abandon India. On August 15, 1947โ€”Independence Dayโ€”he made a decision to raise the tricolor flag during the Olympics.
His wrestling career began in 1948, and it was at the 1948 London Olympics, where he placed sixth in the flyweight division, that he first gained notoriety. Before 1948, he was the first Indian to hold such a high position in the individual category.

Jadhav’s sixth-place performance at the time was no small accomplishment considering he was new to mat wrestling and the international regulations of wrestling.
Jadhav put in four more years of intense training in preparation for the Helsinki Olympics, when he competed in the bantamweight division (57 kg), competing against wrestlers from 24 different nations. He continued to beat wrestlers from nations including Mexico, Germany, and Canada before losing his semi-final match. However, he bounced back to win the bronze medal, making him the first wrestler from an independent India to win an individual Olympic medal.

The 1948 London Olympics was Jadhav’s first experience on a large platform; the Maharaja of Kolhapur paid for his travel. He had training from Rees Gardner, a former lightweight World champion from the United States, when he was in London. Despite being new to mat wrestling, Gardner’s direction allowed Jadhav to place sixth in the flyweight division. He shocked the crowd by winning the first few minutes of the match against Australian wrestler Bert Harris. Later, after beating Billy Jernigan of the US, he was ousted from the Games after falling to Mansour Raeisi of Iran.

Jadhav intensified his training over the course of the following four years in anticipation of the Helsinki Olympics, where he doubled his weight and competed alongside wrestlers from 24 other nations in the 125 lb bantamweight division.

After the lengthy match, he was given the opportunity to face Rashid Mammadbeyov of the Soviet Union. A 30-minute break between fights was mandated by the rules, but because no Indian official was there to argue the matter, a worn-out Jadhav failed to motivate, and Mammadbeyov seized the opportunity to advance to the final. He earned bronze on July 23, 1952, becoming Independent India’s first individual medal winner after defeating wrestlers from Canada, Mexico, and Germany. Krishnarao Mangave, a wrestler who competed in the same Olympics in a different division but narrowly missed winning the bronze medal by one point, was a teammate of Khashaba’s.
Jadhav was the star of the Indian delegation that returned home from the Olympics, despite the hockey team winning gold in Helsinki. In order to welcome their hero, the crowd assembled at the Karad Railway Station. A cavalcade of 151 bullock carts and dhols carried their hero for roughly 10 kilometres and proceeded through the village of Goleshwar.
