Hameed played for Lancashire in his first-class debut. Initially, the Lancashire opener’s approach seemed difficult as he made just three half-centuries in the Championship, averaging less than 30 and he missed out on an England place in the Ashes party despite obvious vacancies at the top of the order. Having developed a reputation for consistent scoring with England U-19s, Hameed blossomed late in the 2015 season when he made an outstanding 91 in only his third Championship match, batting for only three overs of the final day against Surrey at Old Trafford.
Hameed was arguably called one of the outstanding young batsmen in the country after making records in his entire first season of Championship cricket in 2016. He became the youngest batsman to score 1000 runs for Lancashire by overcoming Michael Atherton, the fifth-youngest to score 1000 in a season for the county and the first to score a hundred in each innings of the Roses match to reach the landmark record.
The right-hander was selected for England’s Test tours of Bangladesh but didn’t get a chance to play on that tour. The Bolton-born cricketer created an immediate impact in his debut test – making a half-century in Rajkot against India. He looked in sublime form scoring 82, but his unbeaten 59 in Mohali was even better as he battled with a fractured finger. But it was his unbeaten 59 in England’s second innings in Mohali, where he batted for 156 balls and nearly three hours with a broken finger and sealed his reputation as one of Test cricket’s most exciting young batting prospects. It looked as England found a long-term test opener with Alastair Cook.
Hameed’s career took a lower route as he struggled to make runs in the series post his recovery. Assumptions that 2018 would bring better results proved spectacularly out of the question as 17 innings brought 165 runs at only 9.71 average.
