David Jonathan Willey (born February 28, 1990) is an English cricketer. He bats and bowls with his left hand. He is the son of Peter Willey, a former England cricketer and international umpire. David Willey was born on February 28, 1990 in Northampton, England.
He is an English cricketer who also plays for the Indian Premier League franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Willey began his cricket practiceย in the County Championship division two for his native county Northamptonshire. Following rising through the ranks at Northampton’s O.N’s and Northants Academy, he was given his opportunity in the 2009 season at the age of 19 after a strong pre-season. His debut came against Leicestershire in the season opener against one of his father’s previous teams.

Willey began his career in the County Championship division two for his native county Northamptonshire. After a strong start to the season, he was rewarded with a two-year professional contract on May 8.ย He thrived in Twenty20 cricket, this time with his bowling, collecting 3/9 in his debut stint against Worcestershire and finishing the 2009 campaign with an average of 11.30.
Willey assisted Northamptonshire to a 102-run victory against Surrey in 2013, scoring 60 runs and taking 4/9, including a match-winning hat-trick.
Willey signed a three-year contract with Yorkshire before the start of the 2016 season, it was announced on August 19, 2015. On May 1, 2016, he made his Yorkshire debut against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.
The Perth Scorchers signed Willey for the 2015-16 BBL season. He was retained for the 2016-17 season after a strong debut season.
He was retained by the Scorchers as the club’s lone overseas player for the 2017-18 season.
Northern Superchargers signed Willey for the inaugural edition of The Hundred event. He was named captain of the squad for the inaugural competition after intended skipper Faf du Plessis was declared out. Willey was succeeded as captain by du Plessis when he returned in 2022.

Willey has been signed by the Chennai Super Kings for the 2018 IPL season. David Willey was playing county cricket for Yorkshire at the time of his late IPL call-up before opting to play for CSK. He was also the 12th English player to be called up for the 2018 IPL season. During the 2018 IPL, he was one of three England players to gain late IPL call-ups, with Liam Plunkett (for DD) and Alex Hales.
David Willey has been retained by the Chennai Super Kings for the 2019 IPL season. The Chennai Super Kings released him prior of the 2020 IPL auction. In the IPL 2022 auction, he was purchased by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in February 2022.
David Willey International Cricket Career
Willey was named to England’s U19 cricket squad for the 2015 Test series against Bangladesh. On 8 May 2015, he made his One Day International debut for England against Ireland, taking his maiden wicket in a rain-affected encounter. He played in the last two One-Day Internationals against Australia, taking 3-51 in the fourth ODI as England won by three wickets. Willey got out for a duck in the fourth ODI but took 1-13 as England lost the match and series 3-2.
Willey was retained in the team for the ODI series against Pakistan. [26] In the second match, he returned with figures of 3-25 to help England win by 95 runs.
Willey was chosen to England’s tentative team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup in April 2019. Willey was not chosen in England’s final fifteen-man World Cup roster, which was announced on May 21, 2019.
He was appointed to a 55-man training squad on May 29, 2020, ahead of the start of international matches in England following the COVID-19 epidemic. Willey was picked to England’s ODI team on July 27, 2020.
Willey made his 50th ODI appearance on June 29, 2021, in the opening match against Sri Lanka. He was picked to England’s team for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in September 2021.
