During a Red Eye segment that was aired in March 2009, Greg and his panel had discussed the Canadian Lieutenant General Andrew Leslie’s statement. Andrew Leslie had said that the Canadian Armed Forces may require a one-year “synchronized break” once Canada’s mission in Afghanistan ended in 2011. Gutfeld had said that it was the perfect time to invade the “ridiculous”  country as it had no army.

This segment was posted on YouTube just three days after the reported death of four Canadian soldiers. The segment received widespread outrage from the public. The then Canadian Defense Minister Peter MacKay called on Fox to apologize for the insensitive comments. He said the comments were “despicable, hurtful and ignorant.” Therefore, Gutfeld had to apologize.
