Titewhai Harawira started her visible career in activism outside of her area in the early 1970s by becoming a member of Nga Tamatoa. She assisted a friend in a court under the friend-in-court law of many countries, for the Maori people who were having a court session. In 1974, she stood for candidacy for the Labour Party ticket for the Auckland City Council but didn’t succeed. In 1975, Titewhai Harawira was asked by the leader of Nga Tamatoa to approach Whina Cooper to lead the Maori Land March and help in the alienation of Maori land.Â
She became a part of a small group that founded the Waitangi Action Committee in 1979. She fought for the Waitangi day celebration resistance until the honoring of the Treaty of Waitangi. A Hikoi was led at Waitangi by Titewhai Harawira, Dame Whina Cooper, and Eva Richard in 1985. She was jailed for 9 months in 1989 in a case of assaulting a mental health unit patient. In 1990, she traveled to the Netherlands to ask their government officials to rename New Zealand to “Aotearoa” which was its original Maori name.
