Stephan Patrick Bonnar was born on 4 April 1977 in Hammond, Indiana. When he was less than a year old, his parents moved from Hammond to Munster, Indiana and he grew up there. After growing up a little, Bonnar started to attend Munster High School. From a very young age, Bonnar started to train for combat sports and body weight training. He was only a little boy of ten years old when he started practicing wrestling. Soon after, at the age of twelve, he took up Tae kwon do and made it his main focus. Stephan was only a teenager of 16 years when he earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
After graduating from high school, Bonnar enrolled himself at Purdue University in the year 1997. After three years, in 2000, he graduated with a degree in Sports Medicine. Eventually, when he turned 22, he started to excel in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and boxing. Then, when he turned 24 years of age, Muay Thai became his main focus too.

During UFC 62, a test of the prohibited anabolic steroid Boldenone revealed that Bonnar had used it. The commission fined Bonnar $5,000 and suspended his fighter’s license for nine months. On October 30, 2012, UFC president Dana White confirmed that Bonnar has left mixed martial arts after his defeat against Silva.
Soon after he retired from his Martial art career, he made his debut as a professional wrestler on April 8, 2017.
