He got admission to Snyder High School in Synder, Texas where he completed his high school studies. During those years, he was very active in playing football, baseball, and basketball. He used to participate in competitions and won All district honors in football in his senior years. He also had a very dedicated coach named David Baugh. Not just in football, but in baseball and basketball as well, he respectfully earned his awards. In basketball, he earned All-District honors and All big country honors. While in baseball, he was named District MVP.
Later after graduating from Snyder High School in 2000, he got into Texas Tech University and it was a very tough decision because, on the one hand, he had to go approximately 80 miles from his home, while on the other he was getting a chance to get guided and coached by Mike Leach, who was a football team head coach.
Sonny Cumbie Career
Apart from the breakthrough of his struggle in his high school days, little did he know that it is going to be a long way till he achieves success.
After he completed his graduation, he entered Texas Tech University. In those years, he got a scholarship through which he got into the team before the 2001 season. His first match was against Baylor University. He got a lot of opportunities in those years and he never missed any. Before 2004 could start, he had already given his 62 attempts from which he passed for 40 for 374 yards.Â
In 2005, Indianapolis Colts chose Cumbie as a free agent. He also became part of the Los Angeles Avengers in the Arena Football League. He struggled and shifted in between, but in 2007, he came back as Avengers starting quarterback.Â
His goal of becoming a coach led him to kick start his coaching career at Texas Tech where Mike Leach assisted him. He worked there and covered two seasons. He was assisted by quite a few professional coaches, which even included Tommy Tuberville and Kliff Kingsbury. In 2014, he was then chosen to become the offensive coordinator at Texas Christian University (TCU).Â
He yet again made his return to Texas Tech for the same post that he had in TCU, that is of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The one under whom he was getting assisted, Matt Wells was fired in 2021 and made Cumbie the head coach, and he became the 34th head coach of Louisiana Tech University.
