Thereafter in the year 1994, Archer started a campaign for Zahawi for a seat on the Wandsworth council. Zahawi also helped Archer’s unsuccessful campaign for Mayor of London in the year 1998.
Zahawi was then elected as a Conservative councillor in Putney in the London Borough of Wandsworth, serving three continuous terms from 1994 to 2006, and stood as a parliamentary candidate at Erith and Thamesmead in the year 1997.
Again in the year 2010, Zahawi was selected by the local Conservative association for Stratford-on-Avon as a prospective parliamentary candidate in the 2010 general election. In October 2013, Zahawi was chosen as a member of the Number 10 Policy Unit.
Zahawi is also the vice-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) which is in the Kurdistan Region in Iraq and receives secretarial support from Gulf Keystone Petroleum International which is an oil company where Zahawi is Chief Strategy Officer.
