Michelle Wu was born on January 14, 1985, in the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, to Taiwanese American parents. Not much is known about her childhood. Wu is never much vocal about her life before she rose to fame, or how her childhood was spent. Wu was enrolled in the local high school named Barrington High School and was an excellent student there academically. In the year 2003, she graduated from high school as a valedictorian. Eventually, She was also chosen as an Illinois Presidential Scholar in 2003. Soon, Wu moved to the Boston area to study and focus on her further studies and fields of interest. Wu enrolled herself at Harvard University. After studying for three rigorous years, she earned an economics degree in 2007.

After completing her Bachelor of arts degree and getting a degree in economics, she went on to grab more excellence her way. Then, finally, in the year 2012, she became a graduate of Harvard Law School, one of the best in the entire world.

Wu started working as a consultant for the Boston Consulting Group after graduating from college. Soon, they were informed that Wu’s mother suffered from serious mental illness and was suffering from a diagnosed case of schizophrenia. Michelle’s parents had parted ways by then and were divorced and no longer a part of each other’s life. In order to take care of her mother and raise her two youngest siblings, Wu decided to move back into the family’s suburban Chicago home.

Michelle worked very hard and had hopes that her mother would soon get well enough to manage the tea shop she opened. She also arranged all the documents and finances for her mother’s medical treatment. Later, she then returned to Boston with her mother and sisters and was given the legal responsibility of her siblings. Michelle was made their legal guardian and then enrolled herself in Harvard law school.

Soon, things started to get a little bit better for Wu and her family. In 2010, Wu started working for Mayor Thomas Menino at Boston City Hall in the Office of Administration and Finance. After gaining some experience, she went on to serve as a fellow for Menino’s chief of staff, Mitch Weiss, at the Rappaport Center in Law and Public Policy.

Wu then decided to complete Massachusetts’ training course for female candidates for elected office in 2010. One of her lecturers during her first semester at Harvard Law School was Elizabeth Warren. Michelle soon started opening up to her teacher about her family’s predicament and her struggles. And soon, this led to the two of them forming a close bond. Wu served as Warren’s 2012 constituency director 2012.

After having several kinds of experiences and getting through all her obstacle Michelle was finally able to break glass ceilings. The city of Boston elected its first-ever female mayor in the year 2021. Michelle Wu since she turned 36 years old has held the position of mayor of the city for the first time as a woman and a person of color. She defeated 47-year-old Democratic rival Annissa Essaibi George and won the elections with flying colors.
