But then Masi allowed five cars in front of championship contender Max Verstappen to unlap themselves before the restart. This thing favoured Max and he won the 2021 World Drivers’ Championship by overtaking Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. Mercedes later protested against the race results. They alleged that Masi violated safety car procedures to prevent Hamilton’s victory. The protest was dismissed because the Race Director has the overriding authority to amend any rule regarding safety procedures as they wish, and declaring Hamilton winner after lap 57 would do nothing but shorten the race.
