With more than a decade’s experience, Melina began her career straight out of university in 2009 as an Assistant Chief of Staff in the Nine newsroom. S he was good at English from her school days only and was more drawn into writing and performing so working in a broadcasting sector would have provided her with a job that matches her skills. From there she went on to work in regional television at Prime News in Albury and 3AW as a newsreader and reporter, before she joined the 7NEWS newsroom in 2012. Melina received a Melbourne Press Club Quill Award for breaking a story which changed the laws surrounding the prison day release system in Victoria.

On 23 March 2019, Melina Sarris got married to her husband Jonathan Laquito at The Botanic Gardens Melbourne. The couple chose the date to coincide with Melina’s grandfather’s birthday to whom she was very close.
