She was born on 17 February 1938, in Detroit, U. S. Martha was well known for her in Stratford Festival in Canada. It was a theatre festival that took place from April till October in the city of Stratford, Ontario, Canada. In 1981, Martha Henry was made an officer of  Order of Canada and was later promoted to companion in 1990. In 1994, she was made a member of the Order of Ontario. For her lifetime contribution to the Canadian theatre, Martha received a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award in 1996. It has been reported that Martha Henry has passed away on 21st of October 2021. She had made her final performance this month at the Stratford Festival.
Martha’s Early Life
Martha Henry was born on 17 February in 1938 in Detroit, Michigan in United States. Her original name was Martha Buhs. Her parents were Kathleen (née Hatch) and Lloyd Howard Buhs. At the age of five, they got a divorce. She was brought up in the northern Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Her schooling was done at Kingswood School, now known as Canbrook Kingswood School. In 1959, she graduated from the Drama department at Carnegie Institute of Technology. After her graduation, she moved to Canada and took up the stage surname Henry, from the legal surname of her husband, Donnelly Rhodes, whom she got married to in 1962. On arriving in Canada, Martha Henry performed at Toronto’s Crest Theatre which soon got her accepted into the first class at the National Theatre School in Montreal. In the year 1961, all the students were taken to Stratford to perform scene selections for the Festival company. The Artistic Director, Michael Langham, was impressed with Martha’s performance and offered her a spot in the 1962 company. In order to accept the offer, Martha would have to leave the Theatre School, leaving the three year program. Being advised by NTS director Powys Thomas, she took the offer. Making her the first Theatre School graduate, she was awarded a diploma ahead of the inaugural class.
Martha’s Career
In 1962 at the Stratford Festival, her first season there, she portrayed as Miranda to William Hutt’s first Prospero in The Tempest, and then as Lady Macduff in Macbeth. Through the seasons of the year 1962 to 1980, she performed leading roles in 40 productions. In 1980, Martha Henry made her debut in directing. Her roles over the years included Viola in Twelfth Night (1966), Cordelia in King Lear (1967), Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1968), Desdemona in Othello (1973), Isabella in Measure for Measure (1975-1976), Olga in Three Sisters (1976), Lady Anne in Richard III (1977), and Paulina in The Winter’s Tale (1978). For a while Martha had performed away from Stratford. She performed elsewhere in Canada and even abroad, playing at various productions including Manitoba Theatre Centre, Shaw Festival, Broadway, New York’s Lincoln Centre, and London’s West End. In the 1981 season at Stratford, Martha Henry along with three other directors, Urjo Kareda, Peter Moss and Pam Brighton, were appointed to lead the Festival due to the resignation of Artistic Director Robin Phillips. A few months later, the Board of Directors replaced them as English stage director John Dexter had lined up to take over. For a while after that, Henry had to move away from Stratford. She started performing and directing after 1980 at major art venues across North America, including Tarragon Theatre, Canadian Stage, Globe Theatre, the National Arts Centre, Roy Thompson Hall, Citadel Theatre, Theatre Calgary, Manitoba Theatre Centre, Shaw Festival, Neptune Theatre, and Carnegie Mellon University. From 1988 to 1995, Martha Henry became the Artistic Director at the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario. During this time, she made a variety of contemporary works like  Oleanna by David Mamet, The Rez Sisters by Tomson Highway, and The Stillborn Lover by Timothy Findley. In 1994, she returned to the Stratford Festival as Mary Tyrone in Long Day’s Journey Into Night. In 1996, she received a Genie Award for the film version of this production. Till about 2007, Martha Henry had a long run in performing leading and supporting roles, sometimes directing and instructing as well. In the year 2007, she was appointed as the director of Stratford’s Birmingham Conservatory for Classical Theatre Training, a program that has previously trained numerous new Canadian actors. Later in 2017, she led the Stratford’s Michael Langham Workshop for Classical Direction. In 2021 at Stratford’s Studio, she portrayed the role of “A” in Three Tall Women by Edward Albee, which became Martha Henry’s final performance.
