Wilson was born in Burbank, California, on July 24, 1987. She is the oldest daughter of KTLA 5 News broadcast engineer Mike Wilson. The name of her mother is Suzie Wilson who was a homemaker and a Burbank PTA school volunteer. She is of mixed descent as her mother was Jewish and her father is half Irish. She was raised Jewish but turned into an atheist when she was 15. She has four more siblings,ย three older brothers Danny, Jon, and Joel, and a younger sister named Anna. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and succumbed to the illness on April 26, 1996.ย She went to Idyllwild Arts Academy near Palm Springs, California, and graduated in 2005. She later relocated to New York City, where she resumed her studies at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Which she graduated in 2009.

She got interested in acting after watching her older brother, Danny, appear in television commercials. Initially, Wilson’s parents were not open to the idea but ultimately allowed to allow her to act. In the beginning, she appeared in several commercials for businesses like Lunchables, Bank of America, Texaco, and Marshalls. Later, Wilson was asked to audition for the 1993 comedy film Mrs. Doubtfire. Producers were impressed with her acting and had her play the role of Natalie Hillard. This started her career and rose it to greater heights. She was offered many more films after that.
In 2012, she performed temporarily in one episode of a web series called Missed Connection. She also special appearances on internet review shows for That Guy with the Glasses. In this show, she played a role of an adult Matilda during a review of Matilda by The Nostalgia Chick, Lindsay Ellis. She had quit acting for a while but returned to acting in the 2015 comedy-drama film Billie Bob Joe.
She has also voiced Jill Pill, a writer/director anthropomorphic spider, in season 3 of BoJack Horseman and Liv Amara/Diane “Di” Amara in Big Hero 6: The Series.
Personal life
She was diagnosed with OCD at the age of 12. Later on, she was also been diagnosed with ADHD. She appeared in a video to raise awareness about mental health issues. In the video, she discussed the mental illnesses she has experienced, including anxiety, depression, and OCD. She has openly discussed her mental illness in the media.
