Laura Richardson Career

Richardson piloted Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters while serving in the military. She was given the rank of brigadier general in 2011 after serving in several posts at Fort Hood and as the International Security Assistance Force’s chief of staff for communications in Afghanistan. She received a promotion to lieutenant general in June 2017 and was given the position of deputy commanding general of the US Army Forces Command (FORSCOM).

She was the acting FORSCOM commander from October 2018 to March 2019, then on July 8, 2019, she was named the first woman to lead the US Army North. President Joe Biden recommended Richardson for the position of head of the United States Southern Command in March 2021, and the US Senate confirmed him on August 11. On October 18, 2021, Richardson received a promotion and became the third woman to command a combatant command and the second woman to hold the rank of general in the U.S. Army.

Laura Richardson Junior Officer Career

In 1986, Richardson was appointed a second lieutenant in the United States Army Aviation Branch. Richardson served in the 128th Aviation Company and piloted Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters (Assault helicopters). In addition to serving as the administrative officer, executive officer, and platoon leader for the first battalion of the 501st Aviation Regiment after being promoted to the first lieutenant in 1988.

She served in South Korea as an assistant logistics officer after transferring to the 17th Aviation Brigade in 1989, and then she returned to the 501st Aviation Regiment in 1990 as a personnel officer in the 4th Battalion. From September 1990 to September 1991, Richardson oversaw the 4th Battalion’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company. In March 1991, he received a promotion to captain.

Richardson participated in the Fort Rucker Aviation Officer Advanced Course from 1991 to 1992, and in July 1992 she was given command of Company B, 1st Battalion, 158th Aviation Regiment. Later, she worked as the personnel officer for the battalion (S-1). Before enrolling in the Army Command and General Staff College for a year, she worked as a teacher in the Battle Command Training Program at Fort Leavenworth from 1995 to 1996. Richardson joined the 9th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment as an operations officer before becoming executive officer after being promoted to major in March 1997.

Between February 1999 and January 2001, Richardson assisted Vice President Al Gore with military matters. She received a promotion to lieutenant colonel that year and was appointed the 101st Airborne Division’s deputy operations officer (Air Assault). Richardson led the 5th Battalion of the 101st Aviation Regiment from July 2002 to May 2004 and participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom with that group. At that time, she appeared on the front cover of Time magazine’s issue of March 24, 2003.
