While working as a nurse she represented another activist group and then went on to become the head of Fruit Belt Community Land Trust. She was an active protestor during the George Floyd protests. Her remarks harshly criticized Mayor Byron Brown for his approach to the Buffalo police shoving conflict. She is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.

Mayor elections

Walton announced that she will campaign for the mayor of Buffalo, in the 2021 election. The previous mayor, Brown refused to debate her. She was also very influential and was able to take a major portion of Brown’s voters.

She was announced the winner of the Democratic primary against Brown and Le’Candice Durham on June 22, 2021. If she is elected in the general election, she will be the first socialist mayor of a large city since Frank Zeidler who was the mayor of Milwaukee in 1960.
