Over the course of her career, she has worked on more than 30 films, short films and TV series. Halyna Hutchins was born in 1979 in Horodets, Zhytomyr Oblast in Ukraine. She was brought up on a Soviet military base in the Artic in the Russian city of Murmansk. Her father had served as the Soviet Navy. She used to call herself an “army brat”, growing up around the military.  While she was living at the military base when Halyna Hutchins showed an interest in films, says Jim Hemphill, a film historian. She completed her education at National Agricultural University studying economics and then later at Kyiv National University studying journalism. At the latter, she graduated with a degree in international journalism. After on in Eastern Europe, she started working on documentary films as an investigative journalist.

From Europe Halyna Hutchins moved to Los Angeles, where she decided to focus on her career in film making. She started engaging in production and fashion photography. From Los Angeles, she was encouraged by a cinematographer, Bob Primes, to apply to the American Film Institute Conservatory, where at the moment he was teaching. After being accepted to the institute, Halyna Hutchins studied for a two-year master’s program in 2013. Later in 2015, she graduated after being mentored by Stephen Lighthill. The thesis project that she had submitted called Hidden, which was made along with the director Rayan Farzad, appeared on the screens of the Camerimage International Film Festival, AFI Fest and then at the Austin Film Festival. In 2018, Halyna Hutchins became the first women among eight cinematographers who participated in the Fox DP Lab program. This became a huge influence as it became a way to provide better opportunities for women interested in cinematography. By American Cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins was named as one of the “10 up-and-coming directors of photography who are making their mark” in 2019. For the film Archenemy in 2020, she became the director of photography on Adam Egypt Mortimer. Later, she had been credited for her works in movies like Darlin’ (2019), Blindfire (2020) and The Mad Hatter (2021). Her other works include Snowbound (2017), A Luv Tale: The Series (2018–2021), To the New Girl (2020), The Mad Hatter (2021), and Rust (suspended).

The movie Rust, directed by Joel Souza, had Halyna Hutchins as the cinematographer. The movie starred Alec Baldwin, Travis Fimmel, Brady Noon, Frances Fisher, and Jensen Ackles. On October 21 in 2021, in Bonanza City, New Mexico, at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot while Joel Souza was injured while being on the set of the production of the movie. The shot was discharged by Alec Baldwin, who used the gun as a prop. It is known that the gun was given to him by assistant director Dave Halls. It is being reported that there was a mix-up during the production. Currently it is being investigated by the Santa Fe Counnty Sheriff’s Office, the New Mexico First Judicial District Attorney, and the New Mexico Occupational Health and Safety Bureau. There is an uprising debate on whether the use of real guns as props is safe in the film industry. Alec Baldwin shot the gun used as a prop, injuring Halyna Hutchins, while she was working there. It was reported that she died later that day on the flight to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. Alec Baldwin feels immensely shocked and sad and had released a statement the next day. He has promised to support her family and cooperate with the police.
