Zara Mullooly was born on 11 September 2002 in Ascot, Great Britain. The swimmer grew up in Woking, Surrey, England. There she attended Guildford High School. Soon after Zara’s birthday, she was referred by her GP to a consultant orthopaedic surgeon after her parents noticed that she walked with a limp. Diagnosis showed Zara Mullooly left arm and leg limb length to be greater than her right, and an X-ray of her pelvic bone showed an apparent size difference between the left and right sides. Zara Mullooly was declared to be suffering with hemiplegia, which is a form of cerebral palsy. Zara then underwent continual casting on her right leg every fortnight, over the succeeding six months, in an effort to lengthen her shortened tendons
Hemiplegia or unilateral paresis is a weakness of one entire side of the body. It is complete paralysis of half of the body. It can be caused by different medical conditions, including congenital causes, trauma, tumours, or stroke. As per its types, it can affect different bodily functions. Some effects could be partial paralysis of a limb on the affected side. Other impairments, might appear completely non-related to the limb weakness. But in fact, it could be a direct result of damage to the affected side of the brain.
