Yulimar Rojas Rodríguez and was born on 21 October 1995. She was born in Caracas and grew up in a Ranchito – shack on a small farm – in Pozuelos, Anzoátegui. She has six siblings. While growing up she had a large family but poor living conditions. This gave her the ambition to defeat difficulties, which encouraged her career. The state of her country was also not something that could have supported her in her career. Her earlier coaches have mentioned that could not have pursued sports without proper care in her home country hence it was best for her to migrate somewhere else.

She had wanted to pursue her career in volleyball or basketball but she could not find a coach this was when her stepfather, former boxer Pedro Zapata, suggested that she enroll in a specialist sports school. She was suggested that she could try athletics at the Simón Bolívar Sports Complex in Puerto la Cruz under coach Jesús “Tuqueque” Velásquez. Her first athletic event was shot put. She also won the event but she wanted to explore different sports. She has been setting records since a very young age and set a new national youth record, ranking 11 in the world. This was her first high jump competition. She was young and she showed a very promising career but her estranged father would never give her permission to leave the country until there was a championship held in neighboring Colombia.

Junior

In the 2013 season, she raised her individual best to 1.87 m (6 ft 1+1⁄2 in) with a jump in Barquisimeto. This made the highest junior record in the South American championships. Later on, she set the record as a 6.17 m (20 ft 2+3⁄4 in) long jump and an 11.94 s 100 m and won two international silver medals, at the 2013 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships and the Bolivarian Games.

Rojas, later on, proved herself as her country’s best all-time jumper at the 2015 Venezuelan Championships. She set national records of 6.57 m (21 ft 6+1⁄2 in) and 14.17 m (46 ft 5+3⁄4 in) in the long jump and triple jump events. This ended up in her setting the world records. She won the triple jump title at the age of 19. This won gold in the 2015 South American Championships it was also her debut at the senior level.

Senior

She has been coached by Cuban long jumper Iván Pedroso since 2015. She became acquainted with Pedroso through social media where she approached him first. His response to it was him telling her that he believed she had potential. Later on, he invited her to train with him in Spain. She formally signed with FC Barcelona to their athletics division on 21 November 2016. She is as tall as 192 cm and weighs 72 kg. Right before the 2016 Olympics, she was awarded the Venezuelan honor Order José Félix Ribas – First Class due to her World Indoor Championships (Portland) win.

She has broken the women’s indoor triple jump record at the last meet of the World Athletics Indoor Tour in February 2020. She broke her own South American record of 15.29 m (50 ft 1+3⁄4 in) in her fourth jump. In the same event, she broke her own independent record and became the second-furthest of all-female triple jumps.

Olympics

She contested in the triple jump at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and was a flagbearer for Venezuela at the opening ceremony. She won a gold medal on 1 August 2021 at Tokyo 2020. Rojas is Venezuela’s first female Olympic gold medalist, and also Venezuela’s first athletic gold and third gold medal overall.
