Yayoi Kusama Early Life, Family, and Education

Yayoi was born to a family of merchants who sold seeds and had a plant nursery. She took birth on March 29, 1929, to Shigeru Kusama and Kamon Okamura in Matsumoto, Nagano in Japan. After completing her schooling, she took art training in Nihonga, a traditional Japanese painting style from the Kyoto City University of Arts.

Moreover, she had a traumatic childhood as mentioned by her in her biographical works. Her father was a womanizer, and her mother used to physically abuse her. This is what originated her art style. At the tender age of 10, she experienced hallucinations which she later imbibed in her artworks.

The family conflicts and her increasing desire to become an artist made her move to New York in 1957 but later in 1977, she returned to Japan. Currently, she is residing at Tokyo Psychiatric Institute in the Seiwa Hospital in Tokyo.

Due to her traumatic personal life, she suffered depression and she came to be known as the Depressed Japanese Artist. Besides, she is also famous as the “Japanese Pumpkin Lady” and “The Princess of Polka dots”.

Yayoi Kusama: The Princess of Polka Dots

Originating from her hallucinations, most of the Yayoi’s artwork included polka dots. It led to her being called the Princess of Polka Dots. But this is not where she began her professional career from. It was in 1950 when she started making abstract paintings on paper, walls, floors, canvases, household objects, and naked assistants. This made her a successful artist in Japan.

In 1957, she moved to New York City. There she had her paintings exhibited at Zoe Dusanne Gallery. Additionally, she became an important leader of the Avante-Garde movement which got praise for her artwork. In the 1960’s she started making soft sculptures. In 1963, she started and continued her series of Mirror/Infinity rooms. Due to overworking and not getting her due, she made a suicide attempt.

She returned to Japan in 1973 and four years later, she voluntarily admitted herself to the Tokyo Psychiatric Institute in the Seiwa Hospital in Tokyo and continued to work from there.
