Trent Sainsbury Early Life, School & Father

Sainsbury was born in Thornlie, Perth, Western Australia to his parents. His father was Scott Sainsbury. He attended primarily at Forest Crescent Primary School and then studied at Kelmscott Senior High School. The football player had an interest in football from a very young age and played football at Armadale Junior Soccer Club in Armadale, Western Australia.

Early in his youth days, Sainsbury started building his career as a football player at Perth Glory in 2008. A year later he moved to the AIS where he was part of their National Youth League squad in the 2009–10 season. Later on, he signed and played for Central Coast Mariners, PEC Zwolle, Jiangsu Suning, PSV Eindhoven, Maccabi Haifa, and Kortrijk. He started his international career as a member of the Australia U-17 team which attended the 2008 AFF U-16 Youth Championship.

In 2010, Sainsbury was signed by the Central Coast Mariners along with Sam Gallagher. As a member of the team, he did an amazing job in an F3 Derby where they had a draw with Newcastle Jets. His performance earned praise from coach Graham Arnold, who would, later on, become his father-in-law. The Mariners won the 2011–12 A-League Premiership and Trent signed a two-year contract extension with the club. Sainsbury and Patrick Zwaanswijk formed a formidable partnership. The Mariners won the A-League Championship against Western Sydney Wanderers, thanks to their Partnership. Sainsbury was named the “Mariners Player of the Year” for the 2012–13 season.

Sainsbury scored his first competitive goal for the Mariners on 3 April 2013, in a winning match against Guizhou Renhe in the 2013 AFC Champions League.

Trent Sainsbury PEC Zwolle

Sainsbury signed for PEC Zwolle team in the Dutch Eredivisie on a two and half year deal in January 2014. As was intended, Sainsbury was immediately placed in the starting line-up, making his Eredivisie debut on 6 February 2014 in a game against FC Utrecht. During the game, Trent fell down on a depressed sprinkler and had to be replaced. Though PEC won the game, Sainsbury was injured with a fractured kneecap and could not play for the rest of the session.

After his recovery, Sainsbury played in the 2014 Dutch Supercup. PEC won the match thanks to Sainsbury who was part of the defense that kept a clean sheet in a 1–0 win. He also played in the first league game, at home against FC Utrecht. However, this time also he had to leave the match after the first 30 secs due to an ankle injury. In January 2016, Sainsbury left PEC Zwolle on a $1.5 million transfer.

Sainsbury signed a 3-year deal with Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Suning, in 2016. The club loaned Sainsbury to sister club Inter Milan until 30th June 2017. In that capacity, he played as a substitute for Davide Santon and Club Inter-Milan won the match against  Udinese. Subsequently, Sansbury became the first Australian to make a senior appearance for Inter Milan.

He was then loaned to Grasshoppers and he played there for the rest of the 2017–18 Swiss Super League season.

Sainsbury in Maccabi Haifa, PSV Eindhoven and Kortrijk

He continually changed teams in a span of 10 years, he played for 7 teams. In 2016, he signed a 3-year contract with Dutch champions, PSV Eindhoven. He left PSV in 2019, and joined the Israeli club Maccabi Haifa, with a two-year contract. He had 31 appearances in which he scored twice. However, he was then released as coach Barak Bakhar was not impressed with his conduct. Moreover, he also had a groin injury during a training camp and had to go to rest. After leaving Maccabi Haifa, Sainsbury joined Belgian First Division A club, Kortrijk on a two-year deal. He scored his first and last goal for Kortrijk in a 5-5 draw against Beerschot on 10th November 2020.

Trent in the AFF U-16 Youth Championship and  2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup 

Sainsbury played in the 2008 AFF U-16 Youth Championship as a member of the Australia U-17 team. The team won the tournament after beating Bahrain in a penalty shootout in the final. He also became a member of the squad for the 2008 AFC U-16 Championship. However, he scored a goal in a loss to UAE in the quarter-finals which lead to Australia missing out on being qualified for the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

He was also on the team for the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Australia played very poorly in the match and finished with one draw and two losses. Sainsbury played in all of these three matches.

Trent Sainsbury dropped from the 2013 EAFF East Asian Cup

In May 2013, Trent was selected for a Socceroos Australian-based training squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers. He was selected as a member of Australia’s squad for the 2013 EAFF East Asian Cup. Despite strong club form, coach Holger Osieck didn’t use Sainsbury and he was the only outfield player in the squad not to be used by coach Holger Osieck in the tournament. However, Trent believes that it might have been due to the coach mistaking his laid-back attitude for a lack of commitment.

Trent Sainsbury International Debut

Sainsbury made his International debut for Australia in a 2–0 loss to Belgium in a friendly. He claims that he couldn’t perform well as he was nervous before the match. Nevertheless, coach Ange Postecoglou praised him for his performance against a strong opponent.

Sainsbury was selected as a part of Australia’s 2015 AFC Asian Cup squad. He started in Australia’s first group game against Kuwait, and Australia won the match by a 4-1 score. He headed a  Massimo Luongo corner goalwards, assisting Matt McKay to open the scoring in a 4-0 win in Australia’s second group game against Oman. This was quite a remarkable victory and moment in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.

Sainsbury scored his first-ever international goal in the semi-final against the United Arab Emirates. Under three minutes into the game, he headed a corner from Massimo Luongo in at the far post. This gave Australia the lead and they ultimately won by a 2–0 score. He was named ” The Man of the Match” in the match between Australia and South Korea in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup Final. He was praised for his defensive display and Australia won the match against South Korea. Subsequently, Australia won the AFC Asian Cup in 2015.
