Tyson was born in St. Albert, Alberta, Canada to his Mother Laura Jost. Laura was a single mother and raised him alone with the help of his grandparents. After his initial days, he along with his grandfather moved to Kelowna in British Columbia where his uncle lived. He started living there with his cousin in order to study at the Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy. He also has a younger sister called Kacey, who is a volleyball player. Tyson says that his mother and his sister are the “Rocks of His Life”, and he admires how his mom keeps the whole family intact while working round the clock and bringing up two kids alone.

Tyson Jost Collegiate Career

His excellent performance while playing in Kelowna earned him the attention of the Western Hockey League (WHL) and he was eventually drafted by the Everett Silvertips at 7th overall during the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. However, in order to retain his NCAA eligibility he decided to play with the Okanagan Rockets of the British Columbia Major Midget League. He played in this team for a season and led the team to score 44 goals and 88 points which helped them claim the BC Hockey Major Midget League (BCMML) Championship.

He then played in the team Penticton Vees under British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). In the 2014-2015 season in BCHL, Tyson’s score-making ability was the main factor behind the Vees reaching the Fred Page Club. He was then selected for the BCHL All-Rookie Team. In the 2015-2016 session he was appointed the captain of the team and he proved his captaincy rightfully with a score of 104 points in only 48 regular season games. When the Vees reached the RBC Cup, he was given the 2016 RBC Canadian Junior Hockey League National Player of the Year award.

Tyson in NCAA Division I Ice Hockey

He earlier commented verbally that he wanted to play NCAA Division I ice hockey for North Dakota Fighting Sioux starting in the 2016–17 season. As promised, he quickly adapted to the Fighting Hawks by assuming first-line responsibilities. He finished his freshman season placing second amongst North Dakota in scoring with 16 goals and 35 points in 33 games. This earned him a selection to the NCHC All-Rookie Team. After that, as a Rookie, he helped lead the team to the 2017 NCHC Frozen Faceoff, where they captured their first title and he was named to the Frozen Faceoff All-Tournament Team.  Jost continued playing for the Fighting Hawks in order to advance to the first round of the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament, but unfortunately, they lost to Boston University. Soon after he ended his collegiate career.

Tyson in Colorado Avalanche

Tyson started his professional career by joining the Colorado Avalanche. As a member, he made his debut in NHL, with a 2–1 shootout victory over the St. Louis Blues. In the match against  Minnesota Wild, where Colorado was defeated by 4-1 Tyson made his first NHL Goal. He then attended the Avalanche’s training camp. However, he was soon out of NHL, having faced a lower-body injury that made him miss 8 games.

Once he recovered, Avalanche assigned him to the American Hockey league affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage. He played for them for a short duration during which he gave 1 goal and 5 assists. Soon after, he returned to NHL. Tyson made his post-season debut in NHL in Round 1 of the Stanley Cup playoffs against the Nashville Predators. He also played for some time with NHL Affiliate, Colorado Eagles before his excellent performance called him back to NHL. During the 2018-2019 season, he played in Avalanche for the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

During the 2019-2020 season, he scored his first hat trick in a winning match against Tampa Bay Lightning. He also had another muti-point game in a winning match against Columbus Blue Jackets. He then suffered a terrible upper-body injury. In the 2020-2021 season, he recorded 17 points through 54 games with a career-best +14 plus/minus rating and He recorded six goals and 14 points in 59 games, during the 2021-2022 season. In 2022 he was traded to Minnesota Wild by Avalanche.

Tyson International Debuts

He played in international matches for Team Canada at both senior and junior levels.  In 2014, he played in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge with Canada White.  He won a gold medal in the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. Tyson won a second medal in the 2015 World Junior A Challenge while playing for Canada west and was named Team MVP. He captained Canada at the 2016 IIHF World U18 Championships leading the team to score 15 points in seven games. Even though the team didn’t win any medals he was awarded the “best Forward” in that tournament. He played for Canada in the 2018 IIHF World Championship. Despite his wonderful performance, Canada attained 4th place in that tournament. Tyson once again played for Team Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Championship, and Canada won the second position and was awarded a Silver Medal.
