Early Life & Family of Toni Collette

Collette is the oldest of three siblings, with two younger brothers.   She was reared in the Sydney neighborhood of Glebe until she was six when she moved to Blacktown. Her dad, Bob Collett, was a truck driver, and her mom, Judy (née Cook), worked in customer service. Collette subsequently learned on Who Do You Think You Are? that Bob was likely born as a result of his mother Norma’s (née McWhinney) adulterous affair with a US Navy chief petty officer stationed in Australia during and after WWII. Norma & her spouse (Harold “Stanley” Collett) were divorcing, and Bob’s DNA test revealed that Stanley was not his real dad. Despite a popular appeal in August 2015, the identity of her biological grandfather remains unknown. Collette has characterized her family as “not the most communicative,” but she has also stated that despite her parents’ lack of financial resources, they were helpful and made their kids feel cared for. She recalls seeing Saturday afternoon movie matinees hosted by Bill Collins as a child in Blacktown with her mother. She characterized her younger self as being “crazy” confident. When she was 11, she convinced her doctors that she had appendicitis and was rushed to the emergency room, where the appendix was removed. Her favorite pastimes at Blacktown Girls High School included netball, tap dance, and swimming, and she competed in local singing competitions. Her aim was to perform in musicals because she liked to sing and dance. She enrolled in the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in early 1991 but left after 18 months to play Sonya in Neil Armfield’s Uncle Vanya (August–September 1992), with Rush in the title role.
