Some lesser-known facts about Steve Wright

  • Steve Wright in the Afternoon was the first broadcast on BBC Radio 1 from 1981 to 1993. Gavin McCoy, Peter Dickson, Richard Easter, and Phil Cornwell devised and played a cast of telephone characters for the show’s Radio 1 iteration. Wright, like his master Kenny Everett, went to great lengths to be irreverent, including pieces from the Weekly World News. Arnee and the Terminators recorded a hit single, I’ll Be Back, as a result of their popularity. Later years saw a shift in the approach, with most of the characters being dropped in favor of a “zoo” format with parody visitors and comic routines. Producers and radio personnel formed a “posse” to help out. This was a novel concept for British radio, and it signaled the beginning of the marginalization (and ultimate departure) of numerous prominent Radio 1 DJs in the years that followed.
