Pippen was born in Hamburg, Arkansas, to Preston Pippen(1920-1990) and Ethel (1924–2016) Pippen’s family were not that wealthy as Scottie’s father worked in a paper mill. His parents were unable to pay for their other children’s college educations. Scottie has 11 older siblings. Scottie Pippen’s father had a stroke that left his right side paralyzed, stopped him from walking, and had an impact on his speech, and died in 1990.

Notably, all the Pippen family members were tall, with Scotty Pippen being the tallest. His father was 6 ft 1 in (185 cm) and his mother was 6 ft (180 cm) tall. Pippen studied at Hamburg High. Pippen began his college playing career at the University of Central Arkansas under their basketball head coach Mr Don Dyer. He received little media attention since Central Arkansas competed in the NAIA, while the media focused on the more prominent NCAA.

Pippen was just 6 ft 1 in tall when he graduated from high school, but while attending Central Arkansas, he went through a growth spurt and reached 6 ft 8 in. He received Consensus NAIA All-American honours in 1987 as a senior after averaging 23.6 points, 10 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and close to 60 per cent field goal shooting per game. He was also a dominant player in the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference, which caught the eye of NBA scouts.

Chicago Bulls (1987–1998)

The Chicago Bulls had their eyes on Pippen prior to the 1987 NBA Draft, so they engineered a deal with the Seattle SuperSonics to get Pippen, who was chosen fifth overall, and Scottie made his NBA debut on November 7, 1987. 

Over the course of his career, Pippen improved his abilities and gradually learned a lot of new ones with the help of teammate Michael Jordan. Outside of team workouts, Jordan and Pippen routinely played one-on-one games to improve each other’s attacking and defensive abilities.

Soon, Pippen became one of the league’s top young forwards, setting then-career highs in points (16.5 points per game), rebounds (6.7 rebounds per game), field goal shooting (48.9%), and steals (ninth in the NBA) (211). Due to his achievements, Pippen was chosen for his first NBA All-Star game in 1990.

Pippen played for Chicago Bulls for almost 11 years (1987 to 1998). He became of the greatest of all time for the bulls, Pippen and team partner Michael Jordan were also considered as one of the best duos in basketball.

After eleven seasons with the Chicago Bulls, Pippen, the franchise’s second all-time leader in points, assists, and steals, Pippen finally left Bulls in 1999 and joined Houston Rockets.

Houston Rockets (1999)

After playing with the Chicago Bulls for eleven seasons, Pippen, the team’s second-all-time leader in points, assists, and steals was he traded to the Houston Rockets in January 1999 as part of a sign-and-trade deal for Roy Rogers and a second-round pick in the 2000 NBA Draft. Numerous media outlets covered Pippen’s move to Houston for the 1998–1999 lockout-shortened season, including his lone solo Sports Illustrated cover. At $11 million, Pippen’s salary was nearly four times what it had been the season before with the Chicago Bulls ($2.775 million).

Return to Chicago (2003–2004)

Pippen left Portland after the 2002–03 season to join the Chicago Bulls, where he had started his NBA career and won six titles. After the Bulls’ dynasty ended in 1998, general manager John Paxson of the Bulls actively wanted Pippen’s return to his former squad. On July 20, 2003, Pippen signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the team.  Pippen was assumed to take on a veteran role on the squad to mentor the inexperienced Bulls team, but he was faced with numerous injuries the entire season, only managing to play in 23 games while averaging 5.9 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.2 assists.

At the age of 42, Pippen made a brief return to the NBA when he went on a tour of Scandinavia and participated in two games for the best teams in the Finnish and Swedish leagues, Torpan Pojat (ToPo) and Sundsvall. On January 4, Pippen played his first game and contributed 12 points to ToPo’s 93-81 victory over Porvoo. On January 5, he defeated Honka by a score of 98-85 while also pulling down nine rebounds.

On July 15, 2010, Pippen made a comeback to the Bulls as a team ambassador. He was appointed senior advisor to Bulls president and COO Michael Reinsdorf in 2012.

On April 16, 2020, Pippen claimed that the Bulls had fired him as their PR representative in February. He and the Bulls were unable to agree on terms for payment and maintaining his role as a regular TV guest on ESPN’s The Jump, according to NBC Sports Chicago. He said, “I didn’t really want it to be out in the public but I’m no longer employed by the Bulls. Probably is a good thing, right? I like to associate myself with winning.”

On July 11, 2013, Camran Shafighi accused Pippen in the Los Angeles Superior Court of $4 million as a result of an incident that took place on June 23 at the Nobu restaurant in Malibu, California. Shafighi claimed that after photographing Pippen both inside and outside the restaurant, he was physically attacked by Pippen and was later brought to a hospital. The district attorney’s office declared on August 27 that charges would not be filed against Pippen.
