Early Life & Family of Roman Abramovich

Abramovich comes from a Jewish family. Irina Vasilievna Abramovich (née Mikhailenko), his mother, was a music teacher. She passed away when Roman was a year old. His dad, Aron (Arkady) Abramovich Leibovich (19371969), worked in the Autonomous Republic of Komi’s economic council. Vasily Mikhailenko and Faina Borisovna Grutman, both brought into the world in Ukraine, were Roman’s maternal grandparents. Faina Borisovna Grutman, Roman’s maternal grandmother, fled from Ukraine in the early days of World War II and settled in Saratov. Irina was three years old at the time. Nachman Leibovich and Toybe (Tatyana) Stepanovna Abramovich, Roman’s paternal grandparents, were Belarusian Jews.  They continued to live in Belarus before moving to Taurag, Lithuania, after the revolution, with the family name spelled Abramaviius in Lithuanian. Lithuania was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940. The Soviets “cleared the anti-Soviet, criminal, and socially dangerous element” the day before the Nazi German attack on the USSR. Families were separated and sent to Siberia. When Abramovich’s grandparents were deported, they were separated. The father, mother, and their three kids – Leib, Abram, and Aron (Arkady) – were in separate cars. Many deportees perished in the camps. Among them was Abramovich’s grandfather. Nachman Leibovich died in the NKVD camp in Resheti, Krasnoyarsk Territory, in 1942. Abramovich was raised by relatives after losing both parents before the age of four, and he spent much of his childhood in the Komi Republic in northern Russia. Abramovich is the Chairman of the Russian Federation of Jewish Communities and a trustee of the Moscow Jewish Gallery. Abramovich decided to plant 25,000 new and rehabilitated trees in memory of Lithuania’s Jews who were murdered during the Holocaust, as well as a virtual memorial and tribute to Lithuanian Jewry (Seed a Memory), which allows individuals from all over the globe to commemorate their ancestors’ individual stories by naming a tree even including their name in the memorial.

Personal Life of Roman Abramovich

Abramovich has three marriages and three divorces. Followed by a brief stint in the Soviet Army, he married Olga Yurevna Lysova in December 1987; they divorced in 1990. He married Irina Malandina, a former Russian Aeroflot stewardess, in October 1991. Ilya, Arina, Sofia, Arkadiy, and Anna are their five children. In 2007, the couple divorced. Following reports of Abramovich’s special connection with Dasha Zhukova, daughter of a prominent Russian oil tycoon, Alexander Zhukov, the News of the World reported on 15 October 2006 that Irina had hired two top UK divorce lawyers. It was hypothesized that a future divorce decree (estimated at £5.5 billion (€6.5 billion)) could be the largest ever recorded. The Abramoviches responded that neither of them had consulted an attorney at the time. They seperated in Russia in March 2007, however, for a reported US$300 million (€213 million). Abramovich wedded Zhukova in 2008, and they have two children: Aaron Alexander, a son, and Leah Lou, a daughter.  The couple announced their separation in August 2017, and their divorce was finalized in 2018.

Roman Abramovich’s Career

He dropped out of two colleges during his formative years, with clear information about him as an ordinary academic and nothing more: “I never insisted that I was a good student,” he said in 2012. Regardless, he was certainly innovative at such a young age and showed signs of being a budding entrepreneur – something that was evident during his time in the military, when he made a profit by selling stolen gasoline to army officers. Even though it was difficult to accumulate more wealth in the Soviet Union, Abramovich made a good living in his early career by marketing rubber ducks from his Moscow apartment. Despite the fact that this venture was a success for the Russian, he desired more. So, after marrying his first wife, Olga, Abramovich invested the 2000 roubles his parents-in-law had given them as a wedding gift in a very special way, namely by expanding his stock to include restricted items such as perfumes and deodorant. Illegal? Yes. Profitable? Absolutely. Following his resounding success with illegal drugs, he was able to expand into the production of plastic toys, automotive parts, and other businesses ranging from pig farms to bodyguard recruitment. However, it was during the peak of the perestroika reforms that Abramovich began to shape himself into the magnate that he is today. Abramovich was lucky enough to make his businesses legal, which resulted in booming profits, thanks to Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev loosening the shackles of privatization in the Union. That didn’t stop him from breaking the law, and in the early 1990s, he was arrested for stealing public land – he had used forged documents to steal a train carrying 55 tankers of diesel. Despite this, the charges were quickly dropped, and just three years later, after being Boris Berezovsky’s right-hand man, his fortunes changed. Not only did Berezovsky run a countrywide car dealership and the state car manufacturer, Lada, at the time, but he was also a key member of President Boris Yeltsin’s inner circle, and through him, Abramovich gained access to one of his country’s most powerful individuals – a requirement if you wanted to make a profit in post-Soviet Russia. Abramovich had got an apartment in the Kremlin within a year of meeting. As a result, he quickly rose to prominence in high society, and it was during the brutal dismantling of the Soviet Union’s industrial assets that he made his first billions, most notably through his purchase of the large oil company Sibneft. Since amassing his fortune in the early 1990s, the sandy-haired billionaire has dabbled in politics (he was elected governor of the far eastern Chukotka region in 2000 after receiving 92 percent of the vote), philanthropy (he’s spent £180 million on schools, new housing, and infrastructure in Chukotka), real estate (the Russian has spent $96 million on four properties in New York), and, most famously, football.
