On December 5, 2016, Marco Aurélio Mello, a minister of the Brazilian Supreme Court, cancelled Renan’s tenure as president of the Brazilian Senate, which had begun on February 1, 2013.

On December 7, 2016, the Supreme Court ruled that Renan could continue serving as senate president without being included in the succession. Both the governments of Fernando Collor de Mello and Fernando Henrique Cardoso employed Calheiros. He was re-elected as the Brazilian Senate’s president on February 1, 2013.
